Adventures in the Canyon Country
The G-wagon was not designed to be kept on the asphalt, therefore it was high time to take it out for a bit of sand and dirt and some camping under the stars.
We love the southern Utah desert and started out by trying our luck at the BLM office in Kanab for a chance to hike to ‘The Wave’….but….it wasn’t meant to be this time.
Instead we chose to drive the G-Wagon to a remote slot canyon and continued our journey to tackle some deep sand to a canyon not too far.

“Adventures in the Canyon Country”
not a widely known single book title, and search results primarily point to general travel and activity descriptions for the geographic region encompassing the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, and Moab, Utah.
- Diverse landscapes: Towering rock pillars, natural arches, deep gorges, and steep valleys.
- Adventure activities: Hiking, rock climbing, canyoneering, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and 4WD tours.
- National Parks: Including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park.

It sure is pretty off the beaten path, only ran into a couple of other hikers in the canyon. That’s the way we like it.

- Toroweap Overlook, Grand Canyon: One notable documented trip involves using a G-Class to navigate the challenging trails to the remote Toroweap Overlook on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This drive is described as a true test of the vehicle’s design and off-road skills.
- Southern Utah Desert: G-Wagenaccessories.com, a specialist parts retailer, published a blog post titled “Adventures in the Canyon Country” in 2018. The post details taking a G-Wagon off-road for “a bit of sand and dirt and some camping under the stars” in the southern Utah desert, including trying for a permit to hike “The Wave”.
- Moab, Utah: The iconic red rock trails of Moab have also seen G-Wagon action. In 2019, the U.S. G-Wagen Club held a trek through Moab to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the G-Wagon, an unusual sight for the local off-roading community.
- Sedona, Arizona: The G-Class is also a great fit for trails like the Broken Arrow Trail in Sedona, where its ground clearance and low-range gearing help it tackle rugged terrain and slickrock climbs.
Lily says….life is better off leash!
The walls looked like liquid magma that time of day.

People often see the G-Class as a luxury status symbol, but beneath the polished paint and leather interior lies a beast engineered for terrain most SUVs wouldn’t dare approach. Our G 550, with its signature three lockable differentials and robust 4×4 system, was the perfect weapon for the technical trails of Southern Utah. This is where the G-Wagon stops being a town car and starts being the Geländewagen (off-road vehicle) it was born to be.
Stay tuned for more……as we continue our journey up north to Escalante.
